Subject: Quanta update - week of April 13, 2020

Date: April 10, 2020 at 12:17:36 PM EDT

For the duration of the cleanup work at the Quanta site in Edgewater, New Jersey, EPA will send periodic updates to the community about activities at the site. Honeywell has moved the tent in the northwest part of the site adjacent to the City Place ramp to its new location and are preparing to start soil solidification in the tent. Soil solidification has started in the tent on the northeast part of the site and is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.

During the week of April 13, Honeywell will start solidifying soil at a section of the last of three areas at Pier 115 that required soil solidification outside of a tent. This work is expected to finish before May 1. During active soil solidification outside of a tent, residents may experience odors from releases of naphthalene vapors, especially on warmer days.  A variety of technologies and practices are being used to mitigate vapors during soil solidification in this area. These include spraying Rusmar foam to suppress releases of vapors from areas of disturbed soil; applying Posi-Shell, a durable stucco-like material, to the areas of exposed soil throughout the day and at the end of each workday; and covering areas of disturbed soil with plastic poly sheeting. A fact sheet that includes information on the remaining soil solidification at Pier 115 can be found at the EPA Quanta page at www.epa.gov/superfund/quanta-resources.

Residents can report concerns about vapors or odors from the Quanta site 24 hours a day, seven days a week using the community hotline. During hours when work is actively underway at the site, the information will be relayed to a supervisor at the site and to EPA. The hotline number is (201) 807-0991.
